Aquaculture Challenge

The objective of this challenge is to create a smartphone application that allows you to know the estimated level of growth of fish and shellfish in a fish farming system. Using the information provided by Rheticus® Aquaculture automatic service, which provides indicators calculated by analyzing the physical and chemical parameters of the marine areas observed by satellite, it is possible to estimate fish weight, growth forecasts and the comparison with previous year growth rates.

The mobile app could also provide useful elements to promptly identify critical issues that may increase the risk of loss of production, such as harmful algal blooms, the presence of pollutants or adverse weather-marine conditions. Read more



Over the past few years, mussel farming has undergone a progressive improvement and technological modernisation of breeding plants, which have gradually moved off-shore with innovative long-line systems, promoting greater efficiency and productivity in the field. 

However problems related to climate change and the degradation of the marine environment can cause variations in quantity and nutritional composition, in water temperature and in productivity.


Aquaculture activities must be optimised in order to maximise profitability, comply with regulatory constraints and avoid risky situations. Aquaculture professionals need precise and detailed information to identify the best harvest and sale times, minimise the risk of loss of production and increase profitability.


For these reasons, estimates and forecasts both on the biophysical parameters of the sea and on animal growth trends are essential and this valuable information can now be provided by new satellite technologies.

In particular, Rheticus® Aquaculture services use satellite data to offer operators in the aquaculture sector information useful for the management of shellfish farms and to increase productivity.


Rheticus® Aquaculture can also provide useful elements for promptly identifying critical issues that may increase the risk of loss of production, such as harmful algal blooms, the presence of pollutants or adverse weather-marine conditions.


The service is available as a dynamic dashboard or as a periodic short report containing detailed information relating to the user's systems and sent via e-mail.


In addition to the biophysical parameters of waters, Rheticus® Aquaculture supplies the shellfish farmers with georeferenced indicators and statistics (analytics) and parameters useful for the management of the crop, such as the estimated level of growth of the molluscs, of the weight reached, the growth forecast for the next 14 days and a comparative analysis with the growth trends of the previous year.


Rheticus® Aquaculture information is also exposed via APIs that allow you to activate M2M (machine-to-machine) connections. Participants will be provided with data sets corresponding to the results of the Rheticus® Aquaculture API integration on a test area.
